Laser Hair Removal In Darker Skin Types

Q: What is a laser? How does laser hair removal work? Q: What is a laser? How does laser hair removal work?

A laser is a device that produces light of a single color or wavelength. These lasers produce pulses of high-energy light that is taken up by the desired target. In the case of hair removal, the target is the melanin pigment contained within the hair shaft. Laser produces long-term hair reduction by producing heat in the hair, which is transferred to the hair follicle, which in-turn produces inflammation, and this inflammation damages the hair follicle.

Q: So what is the catch? Why so many lasers & so many research papers on laser hr? Q: So what is the catch? Why so many lasers & so many research papers on laser hr?

The catch is that though laser effectively removes the hair, it can damage the skin at the same time as the skin contains the same melanin that hair shaft contains. In Indian skins and the darker skin types (type V and VI), the skin is loaded with melanin. Hence the trick in laser hair removal is targeting the hair shaft without damaging the melanin on the surface of the skin. Thus the laser light has to be on long enough to heat the hair, but not too long to allow that heat to spread to the surrounding skin causing damage. For this reason, there has been search for ideal lasers which can strike an ideal balance between the efficacy as well as the safety of lasers in dark skin types. On the contrary, laser hair removal in white skins is relatively easy as the skin melanin is less and hence less chances of skin burns and complications.

Q: Which are the various lasers used for permanent hair removal in darker skin types? Q: Which are the various lasers used for permanent hair removal in darker skin types?

The selection of ideal laser for hair removal depends on the wavelength. The ideal wavelength would be a laser between 750 to 900nm. The alexandrite laser 755nm where the absorption of melanin is highest is the most powerful, but unfortunately the skin melanin has higher chances of damage at that wavelength. So alexandrite did not do well on darker skins. Next in line was diode laser 810nm which was ideal for hair removal but the pain as well as the burns on tanned skin was an issue. Next to arrive in India was the NdYAG laser 1064 nm which was high on safety but there again the efficacy was compromised. Most recent is diode in the Super hair removal mode (SHR) which eliminates both pain as well as the skin complications. In addition to lasers, intense pulsed light sources are also used for hair removal. It may be more difficult to predict the outcome and avoid complications when using light sources that contain many wavelengths of light.

Q: How Many Treatments Are Required? When Should Laser Be Repeated? Q: How Many Treatments Are Required? When Should Laser Be Repeated?

Normally, a series of 5-6 treatments are administered at 4-10 weeks intervals depending upon the body area treated. Following the initial few treatments, subsequent treatments are administered, usually at longer and longer intervals. After a single treatment, the hair in a given area is usually reduced in density of hair as well as the thickness. Some number of maintenance treatments may be needed to keep all the hair away in a given area. This depends on the area being treated as well as the individual.

Q: How long does it take to do a single session? Q: How long does it take to do a single session?

Depending on the area to be lased, 5 min ( for upper lip, chin) to 1 hr ( for legs) per treatment could be required. Its like the larger the area, the longer the time required as the laser tip is usually small (max 12mm X 12mm). Hence large area takes longer time.

Q: Is there any pre or post preparation required? Q: Is there any pre or post preparation required?

Before you decide on the proper removal method first determine that the cause of the hair growth is not hormonal. If you are experiencing an abnormal growth of hair on face or if the hair is very thick, you should consult your doctor to determine the underlying causes before you embark on a removal regimen. If there is a hormonal irregularity, chances are that either you will not get full result or you might have a recurrence. So ensure that your hormone specialist gives you a go before you decide to do laser. Usually there should be no waxing or threading done 1-2 weeks prior to the laser and it is best if your doctors sees you with the hair growth. If there is recent excessive tanning, laser should best be avoided. After laser, usually a soothing lotion or a mild steroid is applied for 1-2 days at night and sunscreen in daytime.

Q: What are the areas of the body where laser hr is commonly demanded? Q: What are the areas of the body where laser hr is commonly demanded?

In India, the females wish to remove facial hair, bikini and underarms. The next popular is arms and legs as this gets you rid of the hassle of waxing and shaving for all your life. However men too are increasingly demanding HR for cheeks, ear, chest and underarms. However remember to get your skin checked by a doctor before deciding on this procedure. This procedure is not for everyone. Laser is attracted to a dark pigment, so your hair must be considerably darker than your skin. If your hair is very light, or if your skin is quite dark the results might be less. The best candidate will have light skin and dark, visible hair.

Q: Is it painful? Are there any side effects? Q: Is it painful? Are there any side effects?

Though pain sensation is relatively subjective most people don't report much discomfort. Some say it is like a rubber band snapping against your skin, others describe it as a stinging or a burning sensation. If you don't take pain well, topical anesthetics or else a cold air blow can be used. Coming to the side effects, if you have the right person doing the treatment with the right technology, the side effects are nil.
